| The Railroad Retirement Act essentially
replaces Social Security for railroad employees,
providing for the payment of retirement, disability and
survivor benefits. Currently 818,000 beneficiaries
receive benefits. Records are classified by Social
Security number and date back to 1937. The
Railroad Retirement Trust Fund had a balance of $16.5
billion. The Railroad retirement Board acknowledges 5% of beneficiary addresses on
file are not current, andbut no routine effort is made to locate
individuals who may have 120 months of railroad service but have not
filed for benefits.
Railroad
retirees retain the right to claim benefits during their
lifetime, but for those who have already attained
retirement age, there is a six-month retroactivity limit
